Author: Dr Valérie Mace

I’m a Senior lecturer at University of the Arts London (London College of Communication), where my research explores how we experience spaces—through our senses, emotions, and personal connections. I’m particularly interested in how design can help people feel more connected to their surroundings. For example, my PhD looks at how public spaces can be designed to feel more personal and emotionally meaningful for visitors.

I’m a strong believer in connecting research with teaching. Several projects shared on this site include collaborations with students, where we explore real-world design challenges together. I also regularly speak at conferences, write for academic journals, and work with external partners. Some of my recent collaborations include a project with the Malta National Art Museum, and a study in Milan with Politecnico di Milano and Piazza Grace—a day centre for people living with dementia. I’m also an active member of two research groups: the Cumulus Design for Placemaking working group, and the Space and Place Research Hub at London College of Communication.

Key topics in Sensory Ecologies: experiential research and design, sensing, embodied experiences, the emotional dimension of atmospheres, emotional attachment to place, placemaking, wellbeing.
